Find your child’s special place to Excel in the Scottsdale Unified School District!
Did you know that parents outside of the SUSD boundaries may enroll their child in a Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) school? SUSD will begin to accept Open Enrollment applications for the 2010-11 school year during the initial enrollment period of December 1, 2009- January 15, 2010.

Community Members Needed for Strategic Planning Focus Group

Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) is enabling its stakeholders to participate in the District’s Strategic Planning Process by conducting focus groups at each school. The focus group will help develop new vision and mission statements for SUSD. The information will be analyzed by the Governing Board and District administration. These statements will provide the framework for future planning efforts and guide the Board in its decision making. If you are interested in participating in the focus group, please contact your principal for additional information.

Once again the District is doing a great job educating our 26,000+ students in our 31 schools. Each and every day we meet their needs through our numerous outstanding programs and fantastic faculty and staff. We work to focus spending on teaching and learning despite our very limited funding.

Service Learning Students Make the Difference

Service Learning students help make a difference in their community every day. Currently, there are more than 400 students from Cocopah Middle School and Arcadia, Chaparral, Coronado, Desert Mountain and Saguaro high schools enrolled in SUSD’s Service Learning program.

Service Learning Students Deliver Smiles for the Holiday

On November 23-24, Service Learning students from Arcadia, Chaparral, Coronado, Desert Mountain and Saguaro high schools will deliver canned food items and turkeys to families in the Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) who not have enough money to purchase Thanksgiving meals.

How Technology Impacts the Learning of All of Our Students

Kids Club Attends the 17th Annual Arizona Afterschool Conference

On November 14, approximately 70 staff members from Kids Club attended the Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence Annual Conference at the Mesa Convention Center.
This year's conference theme was "The Whole Child, The Whole World." Kids Club presenters at the conference included Shannon Corcoran, manager at Cherokee; Anne Ottosen, manager at Anasazi and Susan Emery, manager at Cheyenne, who presented "So this is STEM?" including three science activities. Eric Kozimor, manager at ANLC, presented "You say you want a Revolution" with a social studies element involving student government. Rebecca Carter, assistant manager at ANLC, presented a variety of environmentally based active games that she has called "Nature-ally Fun Games."
Susan Emery was nominated two years in a row for the Afterschool Provider of the Year.
Jay Molberger, child care coordinator, is co-chair of the event this year and was honored last year as a nominee for the Jane Romatzke Leadership Award presented to the Outstanding Afterschool Leader.
Gifted testing for grades K,1,2,4,5,6,7 and 8 will take place on Saturday, January 30, 2010 and Saturday, February 6, 2010 from 9-11 a.m. Students must attend on both Saturdays in order to complete the test. A referral form must be filled out by the parent and returned to the school office by January 6th. With the exception of the 2009-10 3rd grade students, any child who has not been tested within the last 12 months may take the test. Students who turn in forms late will not be tested. You may obtain the form by visiting your school’s Web site or by requesting one from your child’s teacher. All testing will take place at Redfield Elementary School. Assistant Superintendents to Perform in Grease at Coronado High School

Don’t miss the chance to see Katy Cavanagh, assistant superintendent of Teaching & Learning, and Dr. David Peterson, assistant superintendent of Facilities & Operations, perform alongside Coronado High School students in the school’s production of Grease.
Cavanagh will play the part of Ms. Lynch and Dr. Peterson will portray Johnny Casino for the Friday, November 20th performance. Tickets are on sale now. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students with ID.

Donations Needed for Holiday Food Drive

During the month of November, students in the Scottsdale Unified School District Service Learning program will be working to collect and fundraise to help feed families in our school district that are in need this holiday season. The Service Learning program is hoping to provide 150-170 families with a meal, which will be delivered the week of Thanksgiving.
Any and all nonperishable food donations would be greatly appreciated.
If you and your family would like to help, please bring all food donations to the ATTENTION SERVICE LEARNING box located in the front office of Arcadia, Chaparral Coronado, Desert Mountain, Saguaro, Cocopah or at the SUSD Education Center. Thank you for generosity this holiday season!

PMT Services Available During Home Varsity Football Games

Superintendent Dr. Gary T. Catalani and Chief William McDonald, Scottsdale Fire Department, met and agreed that PMT Ambulance would provide emergency services for varsity home football games beginning with the October 8 game. The ambulance crew will stage at the game and will respond to emergencies in the immediate area. During this time, PMT may have to leave the campus during the game. If at all possible, PMT will return after responding to the emergency for the duration of the game. Thank you, Chief McDonald, for your commitment to student safety!
