SUSD Budget Update
Dear Scottsdale Schools Community.

We all have been working hard to find solutions to our upcoming Budget Impact for next year.  We are determined to keep as many dollars in the classroom as possible because that is what our students deserve. These first steps to address our Budget Impacts for next year have been carefully considered and are a direct result of the input and support we have heard from our Community. As we continue to make progress on the Budget Process, and as the Budget Committee finalizes their work, we will provide you with the updates.

We are listening. The Budget Committee has been meeting and doing great work to solve this challenge.  Steady progress is being made and our first steps are a reflection of their work and your feedback. The priorities of maintaining qualified health professionals, not impacting our Elementary Specials, and keeping the impacts as far away from the classroom as possible have been identified based on your input.

The SUSD Governing Board has provided clear direction. Our first steps to address next year’s Budget Impacts are:
  • Maintain Nurses at our Schools – All Schools will be fully staffed with RN’s
  • Make Administrative Reductions – We are initially reducing 21 Administrative and Administrative Support Positions.  Further Administrative savings may be identified as we move through the process. Initial reductions results in a total savings of $1,369,000
  • Maintain Elementary Art, Music, PE and Technology at current levels
    • We will not be reducing Elementary Specials
  • Class sizes will be adjusted to 2010 levels across K-12; an increase of 2 Avoids the reduction of Elementary Specials

Superintendent Dr. Peterson's May Letter
Dear Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) Family,

It’s hard to believe that the 2012-13 school year is almost over. In the past few weeks, we have had many exceptional school and student achievements that I would like to celebrate. We are truly proud of Anasazi, Cherokee and Tavan elementary school which each have earned the distinction of being named a 2013 A+ School of Excellence by the Arizona Educational Foundation (AEF). This is the fourth time that Anasazi has been honored with this award; the school also received the honor in 1995, 2003 and 2009. This is the first time that Cherokee and Tavan have received the honor. A+ Schools are evaluated through an extensive application and rigorous site visit by the AEF A+ review panel, consisting of teachers, administrators, community volunteers and business leaders. Preparation of each school's application involves its students, faculty, administration and surrounding community. See May Letter

On April 16th, the Governing Board approved changes to Scottsdale Unified School District’s grading practices that will be implemented in 2013-14 school year. The recommendations were developed by a committee made up of teachers, parents, administrators and high school students. The committee studied the discrepancies between report card grades and performance on standardized assessments and the inconsistencies in grading practices across the District. In order to develop the recommendations, they studied best practices from experts across the country. The recommendations were designed to improve consistency while increasing academic rigor by focusing on student’s abilities to demonstrate what they have learned. The majority of a student’s grade will be determined based on how well they perform on assessments which include projects, essays, portfolios, tests, etc. This proficiency based system will help us better prepare our students with the knowledge and skills they need to be prepared for higher education and the workforce.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Andi Fourlis will host two informational meetings this spring for parents and students to learn more about the changes in the grading practices they can expect to see next year. The meetings are scheduled for May 8th and May 20th at 6 p.m. at the Mohave District Annex, 8500 E. Jackrabbit Road, Scottsdale 85250. If you plan to attend one of the meetings, please RSVP to mday@susd.org.
